Oliver was born in Guernsey and began oboe lessons at the age of nine. He studied at the Royal College of Music, London (RCM) graduating with a Bachelor of Music (Honours) First Class. As an RCM John Nickson Scholar he achieved a Master of Orchestral Performance with Distinction and was awarded the Evelyn Rothwell Oboe Prize. In his final year he was the winner of the Philharmonia Orchestra Martin Musical Scholarship for an outstanding woodwind player.
Whilst studying at RCM Oliver began to experiment with methods of producing high quality, bespoke oboe reeds which are now favoured by several professional oboists.. He specialises in oboe sound production and lectures in reed making techniques at the Royal Academy of Music, Royal College of Music and Royal Welsh College of Music.
Oliver enjoys working as a freelance oboist and has played as a guest with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Ulster Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Royal Ballet Sinfonia and English National Opera.
